The latest model turned actress, India’s Freida Pinto, has surpassed everyone’s expectations with her breakthrough performance in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire (2008).  The newcomer has quickly joined the ranks of actors Ewan McGregor, Leondardo DiCaprio, and Tilda Swinton who have all worked with the Oscar nominated director.  And with people like Kate Winslet and Angelina Jolie offering her advice and support, Pinto is sure to become a household name in the upcoming years.

Raised in India, Pinto studied English Literature at Mumbai’s St. Xavier’s College before signing with Elite Model Management in 2005.  Working under Elite’s Indian branch, she appeared in a number of television and print ads for companies like Wrigley’s, Visa, De Beers, and eBay.  With her face abundant in the media and modeling circuits, Pinto soon landed a gig hosting “Full Cirle“, a travel show that appeared on the Zee International channel.  She spent a year traveling to cultural hubs around the world including Singapore, Fiji, and Thailand, filming a total of 52 episodes.  When the show came to an end in 2007, Pinto was left looking for work and in walked Slumdog Millionaire

After being spotted by the casting director, the film virgin was hesitant to go through with auditions for Slumdog Millionaire.  Undergoing the rigorous screening process for the first time with none other than film legend Danny Boyle…Who wouldn’t be nervous?!  Much to her surprise, Pinto was offered the role of female lead, Latika.  She has been praised for her performance as the courageous young woman who falls in love with fellow orphan Jamal, played by Brit actor Dev Patel.  The movie centers around Jamal’s experience on the game show “Who Wants To be A Millionaire” and slowly unravels his life spent in the slums of Mumbai, raising important questions about life and love along the way. This independent film has been everyone’s Oscar pick (including mine!) and a source of immense success for this ambitious starlet.  Currently, Pinto’s up for the “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” award at this year’s BAFTAs.

With the grueling press rounds for Slumdog Millionaire coming to an end, Pinto is reading scripts and looking for her next role.  Maybe we’ll see her acting alongside mentors Kate and Angelina! One can hope, can’t they?
