Born in 1961 in Kentucky, megababe George Clooney is no country boy these days. This suave actor, activist, and director/producer has been storming the screen since the 1980s, but shows no signs of slowing.

Clooney’s first breaks came with a stream of minor television roles. In 1984, he starred in the sitcom E/R—not to be confused with the medical drama ER, another of his dazzling roles years later—and went on to appear on Roseanne and even an episode of The Golden Girls. It was during his successful ER career, though, that he began the transition to the big screen. His first major role was in Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk till Dawn, followed by One Fine Day co-starring Michelle Pfeiffer and The Peacemaker with Nicole Kidman. Clooney left the regular cast of ER in 1999, but returned for appearances in the final season.

Clooney found huge Hollywood success with films like The Perfect Storm and O Brother, Where Art Thou?, before the stunning triumph of Ocean’s Eleven. This 2001 remake of the Rat Pack classic remains his most commercially successful movie. From 2002’s Confessions of a Dangerous Mind onward, Clooney has been testing the waters of directing, producing, and writing. In fact, he became the first person in Oscar history to be simultaneously nominated for a directorial role in one film and an acting role in another; he did indeed take the 2006 Oscar for his role in Syriana.

This only added to his long list of accolades, which now includes Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and other Oscar nominations. His other “talents,” however, haven’t gone unrecognized: Clooney was the second man (after Richard Gere) to be featured on the cover of Vogue, was named among Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2008, and was declared People’s Sexiest Man Alive in both 1997 and 2006. Don’t have to tell us twice!

Clooney’s recent projects have included both a slew of movies as well as bouts of activism. In 2008, between projects including Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Men Who Stare at Goats, and Up in the Air, he was named a “Messenger of Peace” by the United Nations. One of Clooney’s recent passions has been the Save Darfur campaign, for which he has become an advocate. Many of his activities are also supported by actor pals Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and the like.

Clooney—a bachelor since his brief marriage to Talia Balsam in the early 90s—spends his time between an Italian home and the States, enjoying his off-camera life as a part time bad boy. His last public drama was perhaps his minor motorcycle accident in 2007. Since then, it has been work-work-work and a lot of romancing.
