It was a star studded affair yesterday as Barack Obama and his family enjoyed an afternoon of music, glamour and glitz. Denzel Washington kicked the festivities off with an introduction, telling the crowd, “We are inspired by the man we’ve elected to be the 44th president.” Then, the actor left the stage to Bruce Springsteen and a full gospel choir in red robes. Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, the troubadour performed “The Rising” – and delivered a message of unity.

Equally powerful, Beyoncé closed  the festivities with a stately, soaring version of “America the Beautiful.” The singer beckoned all the earlier performers on stage, leading a star-studded sing-along.

Obama also took to the stage to thank performers and audience members for sharing in the celebration. “Welcome to Washington, and welcome to this celebration of American renewal,” he said. “As I stand here tonight, what gives me the greatest hope . . . is you: Americans of every race and region and station who came here because you believe in what this country can be and because you want to help us get there.”

Kate Moss & Jamie Hince

Not content with modelling and ‘designing’ a collection for Topshop, Kate Moss is reportedly considering a career in music. The supermodel has told friends she is planning to branch out into music after her boyfriend, The Kills guitarist Jamie Hince, gave her a £26,000 Steinway piano for her 35th birthday on Friday (16.01.09). Kate – who once provided vocals for ex-boyfriend Pete Doherty’s band Babyshambles – has hinted she will collaborate with Jamie. Oh boy we can’t wait for this one, a Christmas number one maybe on the way! A source said: “Kate can’t play a single note on the piano but Jamie has promised her that he will teach her to play and they’ll form a duo together. She has mentioned wanting to name it The Mossys for a laugh.  It will be completely different music to his Kills stuff – something much more romantic and ballad-based. It’s all just a fun experiment at this stage.”

Jamie also bought Kate a specially-made ring and two works of art by Parisian graffiti artist Andre, worth more than £30,000. The credit crunch obviously isn’t biting Jamie’s wallet. Andre will fly to the UK to spray Kate’s name and an abstract portrait of her on the walls of her north London home.
