Lily Allen

Lily Allen

British pop singer Lily Allen, has been flooding our airwaves and television screens in recent years.

Allen was raised in the Islington bourough of London where she lived with her film producer mother (Her comedian/actor father, Keith Allen, left the family when she was four years old).  A stark moment in Allen’s upbringing occurred when she dropped out of school at age 15, citing that she didn’t want to “spend a third of her life preparing to work for the next third of her life, to set herself up with a pension for the next third of her life.”  After she made this life-changing decision and spent some time living on her own in Ibiza (without her parents knowledge of course!), Allen returned to London where she joined the Groucho Club and painstakingly tried to get signed by a record label.

The singer was initially rejected by a number of labels (an experience that prompted Allen to actually consider becoming a florist), but was finally signed by Regal Records in 2005.  Her first album, 2006′s Alright, Still, received rave reviews and was nominated at the BRIT awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and the Grammy’s.  And while we’re on the subject of award shows, who can forget her expletive-filled onstage feud with Elton John at the GQ Men of the Year Awards?  Frightening, yet hilarious!  In addition to her musical commitments, Allen has ventures in television where she hosts her own BBC talk show, “Lily Allen and Friends.”  The show, which has featured guests like Cuba Gooding Jr. and James Corden, has been recently picked up for a second season.

While her musical talents and TV hosting capabilities have given her great recognition and quite the fan following, it’s her social life that has attracted a full out media frenzy.  Not one to change her ways because she’s in the public eye, Allen has been involved in a host of controversial situations including altercations with paparazzi (she was arrested for attacking a photog in 2007), being photographed topless and highly intoxicated at the Cannes Film Festival, and talking openly (both through interviews and her now infamous MySpace blog) about her past and present drug use.  Her relationship with Ed Simons from The Chemical Brothers proved to be another source of overwhelming press coverage for Allen, especially when she suffered a miscarriage in January 2008.  This experience put the singer in a “very, very dark place” and the two have since parted ways.

When this budding star isn’t seen stumbling out of clubs at the wee hours of the morning, using hypnosis to lose weight, or canoodling on yachts with mysterious older men, she is writing catchy tunes like her first single “Smile” or her recent hit “The Fear” and touring internationally.  Her new album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, debuted at number one in the UK.  If you haven’t picked up a copy, we suggest you get your hands on one soon.  Trust me, her songs are just as amusing as her personal life!
