Born Victoria Hesketh, 25-year-old Little Boots is storming onto the music scene. This English electro-pop musician has had a single in the top 10 on the Billboard music charts and is scheduled to play an impressive 33 festivals in 2009. The name Little Boots comes from the film Caligula, which means Little Boots in Latin. Young Little Boots began her music career when she appeared on the ITV Talent competition Pop Idol at only 16 years old. She went on to tour in Europe with a jazz trio and eventually signed on to become the lead singer for the dance-pop group Dead Disco. She has been compared to the likes of Lady Gaga and Florence and the Machine and she has gained much media attention after coming in first place in the 2009 BBC Sound of Music Poll.
One of three children, she started playing piano at only 5 years old. At 13 she was taking vocal lessons, playing the flute and the harp in addition to the piano, and was writing her own songs. She went on to attended the University of Leeds, where, alongside two of her fellow students Lucy Catherwood and Marie France, they formed the all girl band Dead Disco. The girls randomly picked words from a hat to form their band name. After conflicting musical styles, Hesketh left the band to become a solo artist in the pop world. She gained online fame by covering various pop songs by artists such as Girls Aloud and Miley Cyrus and posting them on YouTube and Myspace.
She began recording her debut album Hands in LA in 2008 and released it June 209. It reached its high point at number 5 on the UK Album charts. Little Boots also does more than sing in her music, she also plays the keyboard, piano, stylophone, and a Japanese instrument called the Tenori-on. Little Boots was listed on Esquire Magazine’s “60 Brilliant Brits 2009” and her song “Meddle” gained popularity by being featured in a Victoria’s Secret ad.
We have a feeling she’s growing to be the next big thing. She’s said, “I am who I am. I love life and my songs are about having fun. My message is that if you’re not happy, change your life. I’m not out to be too cool for school…I don’t think of myself as a star at all.” She is one of the hottest tickets in the industry, and we’re sure she has more fame to gain.
