Monica Bellucci is curvaceous, vivacious, elegant, and undeniably gorgeous: the perfect Italian eye candy. She’s also got enough wit to earn honours at university for three years, at least until the allure of fashion modeling and acting gigs proved even too tempting for this stubborn beauty. It’s no wonder, then, that Vincent Cassel is so smitten with his wife, even though the two are countries apart (him in France, she in London for professional reasons).

Bellucci was born in Citta de Castello, Italy, as the only child of a painter and truck driver. She began modeling at age 16 while attending the Italian school Liceo classico. Her original career choice was law, and she modeled on the side to pay tuition to the University of Perugia. Soon, though, the glamourous lifestyle became more of a priority than her part-time profession. In 1988 Bellucci moved to Milan, signing with Elite Model Management. A year later, Bellucci was an established model in Paris and oceans away, in New York City. In addition to gracing covers of Italian Vanity Fair, French Elle, and Esquire Magazine, Bellucci made a slow but sure transition to acting.

Her film career began in the early 1990’s; in 1992, she made her first appearance in an English film, Dracula. She and Vincent Cassel met on the set of a French film, L’Appartement, and continued to collaborate onscreen until their marriage in 1999. Monica gained popularity after earning roles in Malena, Brotherhood of the Wolf, and Irreversible, but you remember her best from her role as Persephone in The Matrix series. Bellucci’s infamous portrayal of Mary Magdelene in The Passion of the Christ also drew tears from the audience, though she has made clear to the public that she is an agnostic, and interested in all religions.

For Monica, the new millennium solidified her starlet status. In 2003, the four Matrix movies took up all her time, and a year later (while pregnant with her daughter!) she starred in The Brothers Grimm, along with She Hate Me and Agents Secrets. Bellucci is now living in London with her daughter, Deva, who she speaks to in Italian. She has admitted to the confusion languages often cause, as Monica is equally fluent in English, French, and Italian. She has said about raising a child, “What impresses me the most is that she [Deva] is an individual person. But in reality, she seems to be a special effect.” Like mother, like daughter. And just like her husband, we can’t wait to hear what Monica’s got up her sleeve next. Watch for her as Gigi in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, coming soon to cinemas.
