Actor, writer, producer and director, Noel Clarke has been praised as “Britain’s answer to Spike Lee.” Winning the Orange Rising Star award at the 2009 BAFTAs, Noel Clarke is widely seen as a star in the making.
A West London native, Noel studied media at the University of North London before dedicating himself full-time to acting. He first appeared on our screens back in 2001 with the controversial British TV drama “Metrosexuality“. Noel went on to appear in a number of TV series, including “Casualty“, “Auf Wiedersehen, “Pet“, and “Holby City”. Plus, in 2003 his stage performance in the Royal Court Theatre’s “Where Do We Live?” earned him the Laurence Olivier Award for “Most Promising Newcomer.”
It was in 2005 when Noel landed his breakthrough role as Mickey Smith in the “Doctor Who” series, a part that earned him an enormous fan base. It was even rumoured that one particular female fanatic left him love letters in his front garden. Unfortunately for her and other admirers, Noel is happily married to his wife Iris, the mother of his young son, Samuel.
Noel, who was a struggling gym instructor when discovered, has proven that he can juggle the many roles within the film industry. The buzz surrounding his talent exploded with 2006’s “Kidulthood“, a film that he both wrote and starred in. Portraying teenager “Sam“, Noel helps to tell the story of what it is like to be young and poor in urban London. Recently, he’s found himself raising the bar for the film’s sequel, 2008’s “Adulthood“. Not only did he write the screenplay and reprise the role of “Sam” in the follow up, Noel made his directing debut, an experience he admits was “definitely a challenge and tiring at times.” His hard work paid off when “Adulthood” became an instantaneous success and one of the year’s highest grossing films. Earlier this year, he appeared in Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll, a homage to punk rock that was nominated for 2 BAFTA’s.
Whether he’s behind the scenes as the writer or the face of the movie as the lead actor, we’ve joined the bandwagon of Noel Clarke fans and have been patiently awaiting his next project. Lucky for us, we won’t have to wait long. His newest project is the crime thriller 18.104.22.168 starring Emma Roberts. Once again demonstrating his versatility, Noel wrote, directed and stars in the film, which debuts in cinemas 2nd June.
