When many people think of Pamela Anderson, they think of her bleach blonde locks, her sex tape innuendos, her busty figure, or the string of musicians she’s dated.  What many people don’t realize is how passionate she is about animal and civil rights and the extent of work she does for these causes.

In recent years, Anderson has been making waves in the political spectrum, advocating for causes she believes need more attention in the public eye.  She has been a long-time (and very active!) member of the animal rights organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Over the last decade we’ve seen her in a number of campaigns for PETA including the infamous “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” advertising campaign in 2003.  While there have been a number of celebrities following in her footsteps and posing for this campaign over the years, no one has been able to do it as good as Pam!

Anderson went the extra mile in 2006 when she appeared almost completely nude in the window of Stella McCartney’s London boutique in order to raise money for PETA.  If that didn’t cause a traffic jam, I don’t know what would!  She has also been at the forefront of PETA’s campaign against fast food chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken.  To protest the company’s ill-treatment of chickens, Anderson has written open letters, made videos, and has even boycotted the Kentucky Derby because of its support of KFC.  In more recent times, the Anderson/PETA duo has teamed up to protest juice-maker POM in the “POM Horrible Campaign” which exposes the company’s cruel testing of products on animals.  She’s also joined forces with the organization on their “Turn Over A New Leaf, Try Vegetarian” and “Give Fur The Cold Shoulder” campaigns, appearing in eye-catching advertisements for both!

While her work with PETA is a very important part of her life, Pam has never been one to need the backing of an organization to make other social injustices known to the public.  Anderson has publicly advocated against seal hunting in her native Canada, taking it upon herself to start petitions throughout the country.

She has also made environmental issues a prominent concern, recently making a cameo in Vivienne Westwood’s show at Paris Fashion Week wearing a T-shirt that read “plus 5 degrees”, referencing to the worldwide rise in temperature due to global warming.  Other causes that Pam holds dear are AIDS/HIV awareness and liver disease research, becoming the official face for MAC Cosmetic’s AIDS Fund (proceeds from their Viva Glam lipstick are used to help those affected by the epidemic) and the celebrity spokesmodel for the American Liver Foundation.

First entering the Hollywood arena back in the early ’90s, appearing as a regular centrefold in Playboy magazine and starring as CJ Parker on Baywatch, no one could have guessed that this blonde bombshell would have become the pop culture icon and sex symbol that she is today.  As much of a household name that she is, the interesting thing about Pam is that she isn’t in it for the fame and riches, opting instead to use her celebrity status for worthwhile causes.  Who can forget the Comedy Central’s Pamela Anderson Roast Special, for instance?
Pam only participated under one condition: all proceeds must go to her charity of choice, PETA.  There is no question that Ms. Anderson’s activism and charitable work over the years has been nothing short of remarkable.  For someone who gets quite a bit of slack for being outspoken with her personal life (most notably, her on/off relationship with rocker Tommy Lee), we couldn’t be happier that this sexy vegatarian voices her opinion at all costs.  If only more celebrities would join the activist bandwagon and use their star power to shed some light on important issues!
