Aside from being wickedly handsome, and being able to kiss Monica Bellucci whenever he wants, Vincent Cassel is a lucky actor well on the beaten path to success. Cassel has quickly replaced British and American actors as Hollywood’s go-to European villain; the “baddie” characters he portrays in films like Birthday Girl (2001), Ocean’s Twelve (2004), and opposite Jennifer Aniston and Clive Owen in Derailed (2005) quickly established him as an tough guy from overseas.

Vincent Cassel was born in Paris to an actor father (Jean-Pierre) and a former journalist mother, who divorced in 1980. Ironically, even though his parents were upper crust, Cassel acted on behalf of the despairing suburban social class in his breakthrough film, Mathieu Kassovitz’s La Haine, (1995). He expressed to Parisian tabloids that he could identify with the role because of his connection with current hip-hop artists (his brother was a part of a French rap group, Assassin). Soon after, his role as a police officer along with Jean Reno in The Crimson Rivers set rumors that he was from a poor family to rest. (It also jumpstarted his career.) Cassel never lost his taste for the hip-hop scene, but he has always been a down-to-earth man (and we’re sure, a softie at heart!). He married actress Monica Bellucci in 1999, and they have a child, Deva, born in 2004 in Italy. For professional reasons, Cassel spends most of his time in Paris, filming, while Monica prefers to raise Deva in London while pursuing other acting jobs.

Despite the long distance, the couple have appeared in Sheitan, Agents Secrets, Come Mi Voui, Le Pacte des Loups, and several other foreign films. Vincent has said of their relationship, “We have very separate lives when we’re working, working-wise. I think that it’s fine.” The last anyone heard, Vincent was headlining a performance in Le Sheitan in 2005, soon to be released in French cinemas. But with his charismatic personality on-screen and the mysteriousness he retains while the camera’s aren’t rolling, we can bet he’s up to something. Keep watching for this blue-eyed wonder; you won’t be disappointed.
