Jay Baruchel

It is only March, and this year has already seen some quality films hit theatres. Three films that are sure to add to that list are She’s Out of My League, How to Train Your Dragon and the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. What do these three films all have in common? They all star upcoming Canadian actor Jay Baruchel.

Beginning acting at the age of 12, Baruchel has always had his eye set on acting. He got his start in the Judd Apatow show Undeclared, then moved on to film, with roles in films such as Almost Famous, Rules of Attraction, Knocked up and Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian.

2010 is a busy time for Baruchel, as he has three films being released, two of them already in or almost-in theatres in the US. In She’s Out of My League, he stars as the awkward love interest of a beautiful blonde, while in How to Train your Dragon he voices the young and physically un-imposing youngster who tried to prove himself. In the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, he is the young, naïve apprentice to Nicolas Cage’s sorcerer. What’s similar about all of these roles? It might be the fact that Baruchel is never the beefy tough guy, but always the cute, awkward type. This doesn’t bother him, he says, because he is like this in real life as well and he has learned to use his sense of humour to win over the ladies instead.

When he isn’t cracking jokes on screen, he is either charming someone with his skills in French or rocking out as the drummer in his band Martin. He also hopes that all of his hard work will pay off, and he can spend the rest of his life making horror films in his hometown of Montreal.

She’s Out of My League is out now, How to Train your Dragon hits theatres next week, and the Sorcerer’s Apprentice is due out this summer.
