What would award season be without a little bit of awkward relationship drama? That’s why the spotlight is on Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow and Avatar director James Cameron. These two aren’t simply both nominees for Best Director, but they used to be married!

While everyone knows Cameron’s greatest film successes, Bigelow is less heard of. She has no less impressive of a resume, with a career spanning three decades. Before Hurt Locker, her best-known movie was 1987’s Near Dark, a terrifying story about a family of vampires. She is also the first woman to win a Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures, as well as the fourth woman to be nominated for a Best Direction Oscar.

Bigelow lists her first passion as painting, but she is very much in love with film. She sees it as “a great opportunity to comment on the world in which we live,” noting that Hurt Locker takes a “look at what it means to be a hero in the context of 21st century combat.”

Though she is up against an all-star group, including Cameron, for Best Director, she is gaining quite a bit of support. Both Cameron and Quentin Tarantino are cheering for her over themselves and Cameron honourably explains that not only should a woman should win the award, but he has already won the award so it should be someone else’s turn.

We’re always willing to cheer for the ladies, so good luck Kathryn!
