Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots the musical is an exciting story of the journey from the factory floor to the glam catwalks of Milan..
The live production stars Killian Donnelly as Charlie Price (he was great in Memphis)the shoe factory owner struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business of Price & Son. Help arrives in the form of a chance meeting with Matt Henry as Lola, who is a fabulous performer but gets through her stilettos way too quickly…they were just not built to hold the weight of a man you see!
Can you see the business opportunity on the horizon for the failing shoe factory?
The Northampton firm saves itself from bankruptcy by making the switch from making the traditional hand-stitched brogues to a more niche market – the creation of erotic footwear in men’s sizes for cross-dressers. Bingo! But it’s not that simple, convincing the workers to make loud OTT shoes and boot is not an easy task. Then there’s the emotional back story of Lola, how did she go from boxing in a ring to singing in drag, lots of great one-liners and power ballads in this upbeat and fun show.
The cast are really fun to watch and the final scenes and song at the end of the second half will have you desperate to get up on stage and start dancing with them. I left in a really great mood, if you loved the film you will enjoy the stage adaptation.
With a book by a Broadway legend and songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper – this musical is about unlikely friendships and the power of believing in what you can achieve if you put your mind to it.
