Make me Famous!

You’re following your dream, believe in yourself, work 24/7 and are constantly networking but it’s just not happening for you. What’s next, give up or take a good hard look at where you could be going wrong?

If a forty-something Welshman promised you he could make you famous and successful (let’s face it, the two go hand in hand) in 40 days, you’d probably think he was completely mad. But, if you’re an actor who hasn’t had a reputable acting gig in years, with the perfect body and teeth to make it happen, you might already be mad. These kind of people aren’t hard to come by; Los Angeles is packed full of hopeful actors waiting tables. Christopher  Coliori, for instance, has spent twenty years in L.A. trying to break into show business. He still doesn’t even have an agent. Christopher, and hundreds of others like him, just didn’t have what it takes, or so they thought. That’s where Paul Duddridge steps in.

Make it in Hollywood

Make it in Hollywood

Paul Duddridge’s first piece of advice to a handful of experienced actors who handed over their precious dollars for these power point seminars? ‘Stop going to auditions’, he told last Wednesday’s audience. ‘Just ring the casting director, the night before, and say ‘sorry I’m going to be stuck in New York’, he explains. There’s method to his madness. ‘I try to make people act a bit perversely, to add a little tension to your role. These things make you stand out’, Duddridge continues. ‘Small things can turn into solid jobs’.

Over the past 15 years, Duddridge has perfected his tried and true system into forty golden rules. One exercise forces the actors to step outside their bubble, and into a film producer’s mind. ‘When you realize how the producer has mortgaged his house, and may not be able to pay bills next year, then you start treating him normally,’ he explains. Within the hour, every actor in the room is whipping out their mobile to cancel their next audition.

Do you want to be a star?

Do you want to be a star?

As always with promises of an elevator ride to fame, the proof is in the pudding. But with clients like Olivia Lee, Duddridge doesn’t have much to worry about. Thanks to his constructive criticism and gutsy advice after meeting her on the Rob Brydon show two years ago, Lee is in the process of launching her own programme, the Sexy Ad Show, on Channel Five.

After just one night, confidence is boosted, and spirits are lifted. It will take time, but these actors are determined to make it. And Paul Duddridge is giving them something they forgot to rely on: pure, unadulterated chutzpah!
