Opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the new BBC mini-series Sherlock is the familiar friendly face of actor Martin Freeman, who plays the down-to-earth Dr. John Watson in the show. 

The 38-year-old British actor is most famous for his role as Tim Canterbury in the Golden Globe Winning British series The OfficeHe also starred in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a film adaptation of Douglas’ Adams popular novel.   

After training at the Central School of Speech and Drama, Freeman got his start on stage, appearing in numerous productions at several of London’s theatres, including the Royal National Theatre and the Lyric Hammersmith.

Freeman, who is from Hampshire, England, has also landed roles in several American comedies, including Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G Indahouse, and the zombie movie spoof Shaun of the Dead.  He also starred opposite Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, and Keira Knightly in the 2003 romantic comedy Love Actually.     

The versatile actor is currently dating actress Amanda Abbington, with whom he appeared in The Robinsons and The All TogetherFreeman can also be seen in the 2007 film The Good Night, co-starring Penélope Cruz, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Danny DeVito.
