Andrea Riseborough and James D'Arcy in W.E.

Andrea Riseborough and James D'Arcy in W.E.

There are four films we think you should go and see this week. From a directorial debut from Madonna to Leo DiCaprio as the first director of the F.B.I to some serious whoop-ass from a female secret agent, there’s something for everyone.

W.E.

Although it might have taken itself (aka herself) a little seriously, Madonna’s directorial debut W.E. is really very good. Stunning performances from Andrea Riseborough make this film.

Synopsis

King Edward VIII of England abdicates just a few months into his reign in order to marry Wallis Simpson (Riseborough), a young divorced woman. This causes the greatest constitutional crisis in England throughout the twentieth century.

Coriolanus

In another directorial debut, Ralph Fiennes has adapted this famous Shakespearian play for the modern day big screen. It stars Fiennes himself, Gerald Butler and a reportedly brilliant performance from Vanessa Redgrave.

Synopsis

Coriolanus is a skilled military and political leader who has won an important war for Rome but remains at odds with a restive public. Urged by his mother, he reluctantly decides to run for the Senate but when rejected, Coriolanus’ anger prompts riots that are used as an excuse to exile him and he allies himself with his former enemy, the leader of the enemy city he defeated, and schemes to take his revenge on Rome.

J.Edgar

This is one of our ones to watch this weekend as Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the first ever, and highly controversial, director the F.B.I. in the latest film from Clint Eastwood. It looks like a great biopic… even if Leo did pile on the pounds for the role.

Synopsis

Biopic following the career of controversial detective J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the FBI. In his later years many felt he abused his power, using illegal methods to gain evidence and gathering secret files on political figures during his long and notorious career.

We love the look of this film with a kick-ass female lead. Our only problem is that we know Michael Fassbender dies quickly into the film. What a shame.

Synopsis

Mallory Kane is the woman the U.S. government calls on to take care of their dirty work. She’s fast, efficient, and – perhaps most important of all – clean. But when Mallory makes the mistake of saving a Chinese journalist from certain death, she becomes an enemy to the very same government she once served. Mallory isn’t going down without a fight, though, and after a close brush with death, she realizes that the only way to save her own life is to reveal the government’s deception. Now, as assassins close in from all sides in an ominous attempt to silence her forever, Mallory sets a trap and races to reveal a massive deception that threatens global stability.
