Shontelle

Shontelle is one of the hottest new artists to hit the music scene. Originally from Barbados, she has invaded our airways with her catchy hit tune ‘T-shirt’. Having worked with industry great Akon, she is now set to go on the road, supporting Beyonce during her ‘I AM…’ tour. We caught up with the lady herself to find out how she likes to let her hair down, and what’s next for her.

You seem such a positive and mature young girl, other than your family who did you look at for inspiration to drive your music career?
I definitely looked towards my manager Sonia Mullins. There is so much that would not have been possible without her. I have learned so much from her and she continues to inspire, motivate and guide me throughout my career and my life!

What has been your career highlight so far?
Most definitely having my song “Battle Cry” featured on President Barack Obama’s Compilation, “Yes We Can: Voices of a Grass Roots Movement” He even sent me a limited edition Deluxe vinyl copy of the album signed: “Thank you Shontelle, Barack Obama.” That was a very proud moment. The news of touring with Beyonce isn’t bad either right?

Describe your favourite kind of day in New York?
I think my favourite season is early Fall. I love the autumn colours of the leaves before they fall off and it’s still warm enough to wear summer clothes but it’s much cooler, the humidity is gone and my hair is happy!!

Where do you like to hang out to dance and party?
I love to party in Barbados the most. My top clubs are Taboo and Harbor Lights. NY, LA and Miami are also great for partying. I had an amazing time at Movida in London recently. I will definitely return!

That famous T-Shirt, what label would it be?
Hanes!

What other clothes do you love to wear, where do you like to shop?
I love shopping! The Soho area of NY is great for shopping as well as 5th Avenue and Avenue of the Americas. Some fave stores of mine are Barney’s, Kitson (LA), Neiman Marcus, Top Shop (London. A new one just opened in NY! Perfect for me!), Armani Exchange and my fave of them all is Louis Vuitton. I can’t seem to stay out of that store! I really love showing my long legs off show I tend to enjoy wearing miniskirts and short dresses but I also really love skinny jeans and heels.

Have you picked up any style tips or advice from Beyonce?
Hahaha. Not yet but I plan to cuz Sasha is FIERCE!

Which celebrity wardrobe would you most like to steal?
Heidi Klum

Make-up, products and treatments -  what’s your pleasure?
Make-up: Mac, Smashbox, Dior. I can’t live without lip-gloss, bronzers and shimmer. Treatments: Bliss, Fresh, Carol’s Daughter, L’Occitaine. They all have great face and body care  products with amazing fragrances. Everyone should use VEET for the smoothest, softest, silky, shiny, hairless skin!

What’s in your make-up bag?
Mostly Mac products including the brushes.

Who do you like to listen to on you iPod?
Everyone….seriously! My fave new artists are Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Melanie Fiona, Asher Roth, and La Roux. I’ve been listening to a lot of them lately. I can’t stop listening to BEP’s ‘Boom Boom Pow’, Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Bonkers’, Jaime Fox ‘Blame It’ and The Veronicas ‘Untouched’

Who would you love to work with in the future?
Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Ciara, Kanye West, Kevin Rudolf, Asher Roth, Cold Play, Ne-Yo and T-Pain, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Black Eyed Peas to name a few.

‘Stuck With Each Other’ by Shontelle, featuring Akon will be released on the 25th of May 2009.
