Mimi’s Pick of the Flicks — 01.02.12

There are four films that made the cut for Mimi’s Pick of the Flicks this week, all of which are released this Friday. From the gritty film Martha Marcy May Marlene, which focuses on a young woman’s attempt to regain normalcy after escaping a cult, to the comedy Carnage, this week’s list boasts humour, drama and action.

SYNOPSIS: When two New York couples meet up to discuss their respective children, who have had a scuffle at school, things quickly go downhill. Carnage stars Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz, who each exhibit increasingly childish behaviour as their civilised conversation turns south in a Roman Polanski film packed with laughs.

SYNOPSIS: Elizabeth Olsen shines in this chilling drama/thriller as Martha, a young woman unraveling in her attempt to re-assimilate with her family after escaping an abusive cult and its charismatic leader. Martha is unable to shake her memories of the cult, triggering paranoia that they are still pursuing her.

SYNOPSIS: Mavis (Charlize Theron), a 20-something divorcee fiction writer who returns to her hometown convinced she can rekindle the flame with her ex-boyfriend. She discovers is now married with kids. The dark comedy follows Mavis through her discovery of what it really means to be an adult.

Man On A Ledge

SYNOPSIS: A former NYPD cop and ex-con (Sam Worthington) escapes to the ledge of a skyscraper when released from prison for a day. It is the duty of a female officer (Elizabeth Banks), who doubles as his ex-girlfriend, to talk him down. Meanwhile, his brother (Jamie Bell) is using the situation as a distraction, taking the opportunity to hold up a nearby bank.
