Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

If you haven’t got any concrete plans for the weekend, why not head to the cinema and check out some of the amazing films out this week.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

Our Deputy Editor saw the preview for this blockbuster a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. The film stars a stellar cast with James Franco, Freida Pinto and Andy Serkis (in CGI as the ape Caeser) at the helm.

The story shows the origins of the original 60’s film where Apes are the dominant species over humans (with a few modern day changes). It involves Will Rodman (Franco), a scientist working on a cure for Alzheimer’s, who uses apes to test his drugs.

The genius manages to create a serum, which he believes will not only cure the disease, but actually increase brainpower. When bright chimp Caesar, the main subject being tested on, starts to become aware of the way in which he and the other subjects are being treated, he is taken away to a sanctuary, where he is mistreated by his cruel owner.

As a result of this, he starts to gather his fellow primates together to start a primate resistance…

If you think it sounds a bit sci-fi you’d be right but the film is definitely worth catching, if only for the incredible CGI effects that bring the apes to life. Andy Serkis as the main ape is absolute genius and he shows that you really don’t need an amazing script to portray a character well.

Oh and James Franco is always easy on the eyes.

The Devil’s Double

Having seen this last week we can safely say this is a firm favourite. It’s pretty hard going but is definitely worth a cinema ticket as Dominic Cooper is brilliant in both roles he plays.

The film shows army lieutenant, Latif Yahida unwittingly plucked from the ranks due to his uncanny resemblance to Uday Hussein, Saddam Hussein’s son. He is asked to become become Uday’s body double and, faced with a choice between obliging or seeing his family slaughtered, he agrees and is immediately catapulted into Hussein’s world of power, luxury, and general debauchery.

Before long he’s desperate to get out, but he’s trapped in Hussein’s world.
