Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper in Restless

Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper in Restless

We’ve got some heavy hitters for this week’s  film recommendations. If you’re in anyway conscious of the amount of germs spreading on the tube at the moment, you might NOT want to see the new blockbuster Contagion (although reports are that is IS fab, plus the cast is immense). There’s a great story in Restless and the two rising-star actors are both brilliant in their roles. Lastly we’ve got an emotionally harrowing film with a cracking performance from Tilda Swinton. If that’s all too much for you, try Monte Carlo. It’s not Shakespeare or Scorsese, but it is fun.

See which films we love below…

Restless

Contagion

Contagion

Restless tells the story of a terminally ill teenage girl who falls in love with a boy who likes to attend funerals and whose friend is the ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot. The film is being called “a teenage hipster love story,” and although critics are saying it’s quirky but predictable, most agree that Restless is worth seeing if only for the outstanding performances by the two stars, Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper. Director Gus Van Sant is known for his talent in portraying teenage love stories, and critics say that this film is no exception. He is able to tell the story through a youthful perspective that makes the characters real and the story touching.

Contagion

With nearly every big name actor/actress starring in this film, Contagion is a sure hit. Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, and Kate Winslet are just some of the big names you’ll see in this “nightmare thriller.”

We Need To Talk About Kevin

We Need To Talk About Kevin

All germ-phobes beware: this film is sure to make your skin crawl and we’ve heard that after seeing it, you’ll get a strong desire to bathe in a tub of Dettol. Contagion is about the threat of a deadly disease and how an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC deal with the outbreak. Critics warn that some scenes may make audiences sick, but overall critics agree that this film is great entertainment.

We Need To Talk About Kevin

We Need To Talk About Kevin is a shocking fictional account of a student’s massacre at Gladstone High USA adapted from the best-selling novel by Lionel Shriver, and starring the very talented Tilda Swinton, who is at her natural best in this film.

Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo

The floppy-haired, evil skinny boy played by Ezra Miller sighs ‘Oh Mother Dear’ as he sets out to score deadly points over his mother, his family, teachers and classmates. Tilda Swinton plays the boy’s mother and a woman dragged away from her city publisher’s haunts to become a Stepford Wife, a big house and a soulless existence, empty large rooms and manicured lawns. She must cope with the aftermath of the tragedy her son is responsible for while her dignity and a community’s forgiveness is examined. The film is a bit jumpy at the beginning with the flashbacks – but you can work out where you are by the length of Tilda’s hair. Don’t plan on going out for a jolly after seeing this – you’ll be numb. Highly recommended.

Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo stars teen queen Selena Gomez, Katie Cassidy, and Gossip Girl star, Leighton Meester, and is a must see for young girly teenagers and the chic-flick obsessed. The film follows three young women who are whisked away to Monte Carlo while vacationing in Paris after Grace (Selena Gomez) is mistaken for a famous British heiress. The views are stunning, the clothes are beautiful, and the male leads had us swooning (especially Aussie Luke Bracey, who plays Riley in the film). Monte Carlo is girly and fun, and has us wanting to travel the world while wearing gorgeous jewels and high-end couture. Take your girlfriends and little sisters to this fairy tale-esque flick.
