Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

This weekend it’s all about the cinema! With so many great releases, it is the only place to be. If you love a great rom-com pick from He’s Just Not That Into You or Vicky Cristina Barcelona. If you’re after something with, shall we say, a bit more substance then Doubt and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button should be up your boulevard.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
With an all star cast and ‘that kiss’ from Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona has been surrounded by hype. For me the best thing about it was the performance by Cruz. Better than most recent Woody Allen films, it tells the tale of Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) who spend a summer travelling in Barcelona. Like ying and yang, the two friends are complete opposites while Vicky is quiet and reserved, Cristina is fiery and unpredictable. Things really get interesting when the duo meet painter Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem). Cristina moves in with Juan only to discover his crazy ex-wife Maria Elena (Cruz) still hanging around and that’s when things get complicated. For more watch the trailer here.

One couldn’t fail to notice how many award nominations Meryl has got for her role in this film, so what’s it all about? Set in the Bronx 1964, Meryl plays nun Sister Aloysius Beauvier who runs the local catholic school. Sister Aloysius along with Sister James (Amy Adams) have their suspicions about charismatic Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Together they start a crusade to bring the Father down and force him to resign. Enjoy powerful performances from Streep and Hoffman and watch out for Viola Davis, up for Supporting Actress. He’s Just Not That Into You
“But he said he was going to call, why didn’t he call?” Sound familiar? Well maybe this film will help answer all your questions. Ever since we heard this book was being made into a film, we were dying to see it. The movie follows Beth (Jennifer Aniston), Janine (Jennifer Connelly) and Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin) as the trio attempting to make sense of their love lives in a bid to understand the opposite sex.  A great film that will have you laughing from start to finish.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Once you get your head around the confusing concept and accept this film for what it is, a story, it’s actually pretty good, great in fact. Brad Pitt steals the show as Benjamin Button, a boy who was born as an old man, and while everyone else gets older he gets younger. It’s touching, in parts moving and beautifully acted by Brad and Cate Blanchett (Daisy). Worth watching for the special effects alone, which are absolutely superb. If Brad and Cate were ever wondering what they will look like in years to come, now they know. Be prepared though, it’s long! For more watch the trailer here.
