Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and taking your mum to the cinema may be just the kind of break she needs. Take your pick from the Swedish film Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, or Green Zone with Matt Damon. New to DVD release is the horror comedy Zombieland.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Based on the first of a trilogy of best selling novels by Steig Larsson, this film has become the highest grossing Swedish film in history. The intertwined storyline has everything from romance to violence and even religious themes.
Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) is a journalist needing a change of pace after being convicted of libel, so he decides to help an aging CEO investigate the 40-year-old case of his niece who disappeared. Tattooed computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) is also hired to help, and the pair discovers the link between her disappearance and grotesque murders. Upon this discovery, they need to decide what they’re willing to risk to uncover the truth.

Shutter Island
Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, this film is their fourth collaboration together. Set in 1954, US Marshall Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and his partner (Mark Ruffalo) are dispatched off the coast of Massachusetts to Ashecliffe Hospital, an insane asylum, to investigate a disappearance. Daniels is apprehensive to go because his late wife’s murderer is being held there, and he becomes even more uncomfortable when strange escapes begin happening and he hears about doctors performing questionable experiments. Eventually a hurricane breaks all communication with the mainland, and the duo is on their own to solve the mysteries.

Green Zone
Matt Damon teams back up with Paul Greengrass, director of the Bourne Supremacy and the Bourne Ultimatum, for a thriller based on the novel Imperial Life in the Emerald City by journalist Raviv Chandrasekaran.
Set in the early, chaotic days of the Iraqi War, Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) leads a group of Army inspectors around Baghdad in search of weapons of mass destruction. While travelling between booby-trapped sites they discover a cover-up that completely changes their mission. Knowing his decisions will greatly change the face of the war, Miller mustn’t escalate the war in an unstable place.

This zombie comedy caught everyone off guard at the box offices. It appeared to be just another comedy with a few funny lines, but it was so much more than that. After a mad cow-like disease turned everyone into zombies, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) travels across the nation with Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) trying to survive. They come across Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), both on their way to LA for a zombie-free amusement park. It has been described as a “roller coaster ride,” and if you missed out while it was in cinemas, be sure to catch this newly released DVD this weekend.
