Disney's Secretariat

We’ve got a few good films out this week (it’s already time for the feel good holiday movies!); from something scary to something funny to something heart-warming to something endorsed by Her Majesty the Queen herself!

In the heart-warming flick Secretariat (which is based on a true story),  Penny (played by Diane Lane) must take over her father’s stables in Virginia after he passes away.  She recruits the help of experienced trainer Lucien Laurin (played by John Malkovich) who helps her break into the male dominated world of racing.  Her venture into racing proves to be a success as Secretariat becomes the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 25 years and one of the greatest racehorses of all time.  The movie is about having faith in the underdog, following your heart and the importance of family.  You’ll leave the cinema feeling warm and fuzzy—which is the way you should be feeling during the holidays.

Monsters and Voyage of the Dawn Treader

If you’d fancy something funny instead of heart-warming, check out Brad Pitt, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell’s new movie Megamind.  The film follows Megamind and Metroman, both sent from space to Earth.  The two were destined to become enemies, but when Metroman is finally conquered Megamind is left without a purpose, so he creates a new hero to fight.  This plan backfires though and it’s Megamind that must play the hero.  We love any Brad movie, and with the comedy of Tina and Will behind this movie, you’ll be laughing through the whole film.

From funny to scary, takes us from Megamind to Monsters.  The movie follows a journalist and tourist as they try to cross ‘The Infected Zone’—an area in Mexico that has been quarantined after an accident caused by NASA.  When a probe sent out by the space company crashes to Mexico on its return to Earth, it brought with it various life forms which started living and growing throughout the country.  The film has gotten really good reviews—it’s not your average monster movie.

Miral and Megamind

The third instalment of Chronicles of Narnia comes out tomorrow.  In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the youngest Pevensie children return to Narnia once again after a painting of a ship comes to life.  They meet up with their friend Prince Caspian and in their adventure they encounter dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world.  We’d like to mention, HM the Queen viewed the film at the premiere Tuesday and seemed to have enjoyed it.

Frida Pinto’s drama Miral, which screened at the BFI film festival in October, is also out this week.  The movie follows Frida’s character Miral as she lives a sheltered life in an orphanage in Jerusalem.  After she is sent to work at a refugee camp she falls for a political activist and is torn between the fight for the future of her people and the lessons that education is the way to peace.
