Oscar Buzz

While all the stars spend this week getting facials, touching up highlights and making last minute dress alterations, we are taking a look at some pre-show Oscar gossip.

The big news these days is of course the Hurt Locker’s producer, Nicolas Chartier, and his crazy campaign strategies. He sent anti-Avatar propaganda to the voters responsible for picking the Oscar winners and asking them to vote for his movie instead, obviously a tad insecure about his movie’s ability to win on its own! Unfortunately for him, his actions have gone and got him banned from the ceremony, so he will have to watch the outcome at home on TV like the rest of us. But guessing he will be sulking more than me that he’s not there.

Even though Chartier was clearly sceptical, surely it’s not that big of a stretch to think Hurt Locker will win for Best Film?! Of course, while most of us assume that James Cameron’s brainchild Avatar will win, many are saying that Hurt Locker is a strong contender. After all, it has already won a BAFTA, among other awards, so why shouldn’t it take home the big one?

One reason may be the increased level of competition. This year, for the first time since 1944, there are ten nominees for Best Picture rather than the usual five. This also reorganises the voting process, completely changing the chances of each film to win. While we think it is nice they are giving more films recognition, it sort of takes away from the prestige, doesn’t it?

In terms of other nominations, the Best Director nominees are definitely not run of the mill. Kathryn Bigelow, the director of Hurt Locker, is only the fourth woman director ever nominated and Lee Daniels, nominated for Precious, is only the second African American. We think both of these directors have a pretty big chance of taking home the Oscar.

One our favourite parts of the Academy Awards show is the long, rambling speeches that are always full of laughter, tears and endless lists of gratitude. If you are with us, and were looking forward to see what this year’s winners have to say, we have some bad news… Speeches are being limited to 45 seconds! However the producers of the show do ask everyone to save all their gushing for a special “Thank You Cam” backstage. I wonder if the stars will stick to this request?

Let’s get on to something more exciting: which stars will be walking down the red carpet and which ones won’t. Many of the presenters this year are young Hollywood newcomers like Miley Cyrus, Zac Efron, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. Plus the comedy factor will be there in spades from presenters Sacha Baron Cohen, Jason Bateman, Steve Carell, Tina Fey and Ben Stiller. Also, a new addition to the ceremony, Joel Madden will be the house DJ throughout the awards. Unfortunately, Stewart’s newly public boyfriend Robert Pattinson and Cyrus’s significant other, Liam Hemsworth, will both stay home rather than attend the event.
