If you’ve got a free lunch hour or want a respite from the hot pavements around Covent Garden, then get along to the 2010 BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery, St Martin’s Place, WC2H OHE.

This award was set up 21 years ago to celebrate the best in British portraiture which so often gets forgotten against the publicity noise that surrounds ships in bottles and unmade beds. There are portraits of the well-known (Molly Parkin, Boris Johnson, Alan Richman) and the unknown – in fact this year’s winner was a portrait of the artists dead mother moments after her death (Last Portrait of Mother, Daphne Todd).

This aside the selection this year is super-realistic and is worth a visit just because it is hard to see with many of the paintings that they are in fact oil on canvas and not high quality photographs. Jaw-dropping!

The exhibition is on from 24th June to 19th September 2010, 10am-6pm (until 9pm on Thursdays and Fridays).
