Art and celebrity collide in a new exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Photographs and memorabilia from Beatles to Bowie: The 60s Exposed illustrate the powers that helped create the “Swinging London” scene of the 1960s. We take our visual cues very seriously in today’s world, and this exhibition is no exception.

In a set of nearly two hundred images—including some previously unseen works—the Portrait Gallery attempts to explain how music, images, and fashion worked together to create icons. Artists from The Who, The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix to David Bowie himself are captured by a range of photographers: younger photographers like Philip Townsend, for instance, are featured alongside more established pros of the decade like Cecil Beaton and Norman Parkinson.

The exhibition also highlights one of the most epic rivalries of the 60s, The Beatles versus the Rolling Stones. What’s interesting is the way each of these groups changed over the years, as members aged and the music evolved. The photographs, record sleeves, and magazines show this progression. You can even see how trends like Glam Rock later took over the pop of the early 60s.

The exhibition is open until 24 January with admission at £11 (£10/£9 concessions) and free for Gallery Supporters.

We’re also looking forward to the Iriving Penn Portraits display running 18 February to 6 June of 2010. Penn’s nearly seventy-year career produced innumerable works of art, and the portraits are not to be missed. From Christian Dior, Nicole Kidman, Picasso, to Duke Ellington, Penn created iconic images of cultural figures. This exhibition will be a celebrity-packed treat to enjoy in the new year. Just have to make it through all the Christmas events in one piece!
