The 53rd Grammy Awards

Lady Gaga on the Grammy red carpet in her egg.

This years Grammy Awards ended up with some major upsets. However, the red carpet shined with performers.

The opening of the Grammy’s was dedicated to ‘Respect’ singer, the great Aretha Franklin, who is currently battling with pancreatic cancer. Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Florence Welch, Martina McBride, and Yolanda Adams, performed a tribute to her, which set up for a great night (until X-Tina took a bit of a tumble on stage!).

Although Eminem was up for 10 awards, he walked away with one award, Best Rap Album for his most recent, ‘Recovery’ album. There were also some other very big shockers including Best New Artist going to not-so-well known jazz singer, Esperanza Spalding. Her response to the win proved she was just as shocked as everyone else. “I take this honor to heart so sincerely and I’ll do my damnedest to make great music for all of you. It’s such an honor and God bless,” she said.

Everyone thought Justin Bieber was going to take away the prize, but unfortunately for him, Bieber Fever wasn’t on his side last night. However, Bieber did look pretty dapper on the red carpet, rocking a white velvet Dolce and Gabbana suit.

Album of the year went to Arcade Fire- another surprise, especially for Eminem who was up for the Award and a shoe-in for the win. Lady Antebellum took home 5 awards including Song of the Year and Record of the Year for their hit, ‘Need You Know’. Lady Gaga also stunned the crowd showing up in, well, an egg… Her recent new single ‘Born This Way’ just hit airwaves, so we didn’t expect nothing less of Gaga.

There were plenty of other performances though as Justin Bieber, Usher and Jayden Smith took the stage together, as well as a romantic performance from Katy Perry (where she streamed exclusive unseen footage from her wedding to Russell Brand). Rihanna, Eminem and Dr. Dre definitely put on quite the performance as well. Of course, Lady Gaga didn’t disappoint when she sang ‘Born This Way’ for one of the first times on stage debuting her new hit. Mick Jagger received a Standing ovation for his first live performance on the Grammy stage.
