The closing act of the London Film Festival last October, Slumdog Millionaire, has been the most anticipated film of the new year, opening on Friday 9th January. Nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globes, Danny Boyle’s latest offering is hotly tipped to be a winner at the Oscars in February.

Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai. Malik, played by Dev Patel from Skins, is a contestant on India’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, but is arrested when he’s just one answer away from the 20 million rupee prize, on account of his vast knowledge. Nobody on the show has ever come as close to winning the jackpot as the uneducated Jamal, and the police want to know how he suddenly has all the answers. As the film progresses so Jamal’s tale unravels: revealing his childhood on the streets, the girl he found and lost, and all the life events that led him to be the most successful contestant India has ever seen.

Danny Boyle explained how he auditioned hundreds of people for the part of Malik, but it wasn’t until his daughter saw Patel’s character ‘Anwar’ in Skins, that he found his lead. Boyle, director of Trainspotting and 28 Days Later said that all the boys trying for the part looked too much like “heroes”. “I needed a loser,” he jokingly added. Luckily Dev Patel was perfect for the director, though we’re pretty sure that he’s not a loser in real life, even if ‘Anwar’ wasn’t the coolest of characters in Skins.

Capturing the essence of Mumbai, the film is a montage of colour and pace, filled with music and dancing. Set to be one of the heart-warmers of the year, it’s definitely worth a look.
