Rhys Ifans Spiderman

Rhys is the latest actor to join the Spiderman reboot cast

A couple days ago we announced that Andrew Garfield will be playing Peter Parker in the new Spiderman reboot, now we’ve just learned that his nemesis has been cast too!

Sony Pictures announced that Welsh actor Rhys Ifan will be playing the villain in the new movie.  The character Rhys will be playing still remains a mystery, although Spiderman’s most famous enemies include the Green Goblin, the Lizard, Venom, the Vulture and Doc Oc.

Sony’s Matt Tolmach said, “We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the SpiderMan movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans.”

Rhys Ifans Mr.Nice

The actor's latest role was playing Howard Marks in Mr.Nice

Rhys is currently starring in the biopic Mr. Nice, based on the life of British drug smuggler Howard Marks.  He also just wrapped filming for the Shakespeare historical thriller Anonymous which he plays Edward de Vere, the Earl of Oxford and will be co-starring in next month’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.

Rhys’s breakout role was playing Hugh Grant’s offbeat room-mate in Notting Hill. This year, he co-starred Nanny McPhee Returns and Ben Stiller’s comic drama Greenberg.

We can’t wait for the new Spiderman to start filming; it will be interesting to see what Rhys will do with this bad-guy character.  What do you think of the casting choices for the reboot so far?
