Katharine McPhee

Katharine Hope McPhee was born 25 March 1984.

At just 23, she married Nicholas Cokas, who was 42, on 2 February 2008. A season 5 American Idol runner-up, her playful personality captured audiences throughout the competition. Her high cheekbones and flowing brown locks were the envy of many. She has been in the spotlight more than the winner of that season Taylor Hicks (um, who?). Though she was runner up to Hicks, she received a Ford Mustang convertible, released a cover of “Over the Rainbow” and her own single “My Destiny,” which she sang on the finale. She also signed a record deal with Clive Davis.

Shortly after Idol wrapped, McPhee revealed that she had struggled with bulimia, saying she would go through “phases of exercising compulsively and starving [her]self.” McPhee enrolled in L.A’s Eating Disorder Center of California where she spent three months in therapy, learning to healthily lose 30 pounds.

McPhee returns to the spotlight in NBC’s Smash after a string of supporting roles in films like The House Bunny, Shark Night 3D, and appearances on US show Community, CSI NY, and Family Guy.

Katherine McPhee as Marilyn Monroe in the hit show 'Smash'

On Smash, we get to hear McPhee’s voice again. Aside from her acting chops, McPhee’s voice will be centre-stage once again (where it belongs) as she sings Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful” among other covers and performances of original material.

No animosity between musicals here, on the Golden Globe red carpet Katharine shared that she is grateful to fellow musical Glee for “open[ing] the door, and [making] music work on television.”

With the release of her second album, “Unbroken“, McPhee cut her hair short and dyed it blonde, foregoing her trademark flowing brown locks. The black and white cover for the album shows McPhee as Monroe, a foreshadowing of her present role in Smash. McPhee has now, thankfully, returned to being a brunette.

On Smash, she starts out “more Norma Jean than Marilyn Monroe,” more shy than the international sex symbol that Monroe is known for.
