Sam Worthington had his international break through after bagging the lead role in the 2009 James Cameron-directed science-fiction epic Avatar. He’s also starred on-screen with Christian Bale, Bryce Dallas Howard and Common in Terminator Salvation and this year he is set to star alongside Keira Knightly and Eva Mendes in the drama Last Night.

Worthington was born on August 2, 1976 in Surrey, southeastern England but moved with his parents to Perth, Western Australia when he was six years old.

It might be hard to imagine him anything other than a successful actor with such heavyweight titles under his belt, but Worthington didn’t start to pursue his career in performing arts until his 20s. He dropped out of school at 17 and had been biding his time working a series of odd jobs before his path changed dramatically after he agreed to accompany a girlfriend to her audition for Sydney’s National Institute of Dramatic Art. While there, Sam Worthington’s impulsive decision to audition proved successful, as he found himself accepted to the prestigious school (awkwardly his girlfriend, on the other hand, was denied a place).

Worthington performed leading roles primarily, in a variety of low-budget films before transitioning to major studio films, ranging from romantic drama and comedy-drama to science fiction and action. However, he made his cinematic debut in 2000 in Aussie comedy Bootmen (although he was already well known in Australia from the acclaimed Australian TV series Love My Way for his role as Howard, the main love interest of the female lead).

Worthington is always very picky when it came to the roles and films he accepted or turned down and it seems to have paid off as he received the Best Lead Actor award from the Australian Film Institute (AFI) for his lead performance in Somersault (2004) and the  awards have kept coming! In 2009, he got his first Teen Choice Award nomination for Choice Movie Fresh Face Male for Terminator Salvation and was nominated again for 2010 Teen Choice Award for Best Fantasy Actor for his role as Perseus in Clash of Titans.

In terms of some personal trivia, Worthington had a relationship with Maeve Dermody from 2005 to 2008. In January 2011, he split from his girlfriend, fashion stylist Natalie Marks, after almost three years together.

Worthington was once described as one of Australia’s most likable young leading men by efilmcritic.com and his undeniable acting skills and on-screen charisma definitely make him one to watch… especially now he’s rumoured to be single!
