Starsailor

Not many music artists can say they’ve made it to a fourth album in less than two years, but Starsailor have done just that. They’re not the type to brag, but they’ll pop up on iTunes faster than you can memorize the names of their Top 40 singles (there are ten). Starsailor’s unpredicted success story has shocked the band members. In the time it usually takes to sign with a record company, four unlikely pop stars have stumbled upon success at breakneck pace with album titles like Love is Here and All The Plans. The band received their first glowing review after only the second time they performed in London, summer 2000. The article claimed that Starsailor was the “new Coldplay”, among other popularity-boosting comments.

Their newfound fame turned heads, especially those of record company associates. Within 18 months, Starsailor’s music made them one of the hottest “It” groups in the country. Their debut album sold more than one million copies in a few short weeks. Singer James Walsh said of their almost instant fame, “It was like being catapulted into a world of madness; there was no preparation for it at all. The sensitivity and tendency to mirror artistic legends like Neil Young found them harsh critics along with dedicated fans, however. Bassist James Stelfox and drummer Ben Byrne retaliated with a more resonant and mature second album. Silence is Easy was again recorded with producer Steve Osbourne.

All The Plans

All The Plans

Their first single, ‘Tell Me It’s Not Over’ evokes consistency and feeling from Walsh’s impressive new lyrics. “Before…we were just kids from a college in Wigan who didn’t have a lot to say, except what we said in the songs.” They’ve consistently improved, furthering each band member’s career. Where most artists usually fizzle after at least the third album, Starsailor’s music just keeps outdoing themselves; On The Outside and All The Plans are both must-haves. And if just listening to their music isn’t enough, try catching them live where they really excel, oh, and they are pretty easy on the eye ladies. For a list of live dates go to starsailor.net.

Not many bands come this far, acknowledges James Walsh, “We’re all driven and we’ve all had the courage…we’re going to continue until we’ve achieved what we’d like to.” Watch this space, and in the meantime I really recommend the new album, buy All The Plans here
