Finally – the shows you’ve all been waiting for – on Sky!  BSkyB is launching Sky Atlantic, a new entertainment channel, on 1 February.  The channel will feature major HBO shows, such as Martin Scorsese’s Boardwalk Empire and David Simon’s Treme, beginning next month.

We are already super excited about Boardwalk Empire.  The American television show is based on the book Boardwalk Empire by Nelson Johnson and based on a true story.  The show is set in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition Era of the 1920s and 30s.  Steve Buscemi stars as the main character Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, who is the treasurer of Atlantic City and the city’s most powerful criminal figure.  It’s about time for this drama to come to the UK!

AMC’s Mad Men, which has traditionally aired on BBC4, will start its fifth series on Sky Atlantic in August.  This American drama series is set in 1960s New York City at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, an advertising agency.  It stars John Hamm as creative director Don Draper and demonstrates the social and political changes in that decade.  The show is quite impressive, having won thirteen Emmys and four Golden Globes already.

More British and American shows to now air on Sky Atlantic are SyFy’s Battlestar Galactica, Big Love, police drama Blue Bloods (starring Tom Selleck), Bored to Death, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, Flight of the Conchords, The Pacific, How to Make it in America (from the makers of Entourage), Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Weeds, Showtime drama The Borgias, Hit and Miss, and Mildred Pierce (starring Kate Winslet).

Stuart Murphy, programming director for Sky Atlantic and Sky 1, raved that Sky Atlantic will be an “incredible channel: seminal, world-class, epic TV all in one place.”  He also said Sky would air its shows at better times than the BBC.

The new channel will be available in both standard definition and HD and will be a part of Sky subscribers’ package of channels.

We’re excited to have these amazing HBO dramas all in one place.  What do you think?
