Sushinho Restaurant

Sushinho Restaurant

A Brazilain/Japanese fusion bar? Errr, come again? But yes ladies, it’s true, such a place does exist as I found out on my first foray to the King’s Road since I was about 14. Now, I have nothing against the King’s Road, I just can’t afford to shop/eat/breath there so I tend to stay in the grubbier parts of North London.

Anyway – back to the review! Sushino (pronounced su-shee-nyo) is a bar/restaurant which has been turning out fantastic food for the last couple of years – and I had heard great things about their huge range of cocktails.

Keen to check it out I tottered downstairs to the basement cocktail bar, a decent enough size for about 40 or so people. Considering the countries the bar was meant to be recreating, I found the bar very stark, with none of the vibrancy of colour or style you’d expect from the 2 cultures, which was slightly disappointing.

Now then – cocktails!  First off was the sushinho sakeirinha (£7) which demonstrated the Brazilian/Japanese ethos of the place perfectly – sake with muddled pink grapefruit and passion fruit, deliciously refreshing and a great drink to get started with.  The bartenders were really competent – when I asked for a cocktail that would not give the usual sugar rush, they served me a very green ‘gingerbread slipper’ (£7.50) which had a hint of gingerbread syrup and was most definitely tequila based! The cocktail list was massive, with drinks containing everything from cigar infused bitters to black pepper syrup, and also reasonably priced making it far to easy to have ‘just one more’.

Leaving the bar after a couple of hours of serenading by the guitar player in the corner (acoustic Britney Spears anyone?), I felt that sushinho was a good little bar and with a few interior tweaks, it could make the King’s Road a more appealing destination.
