Neil Patrick Harris, star of CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother will host the 61st Primetime Emmy awards. It will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angles on Sunday, September 20. Harris was also the host of this year’s Tony Awards, recognizing American theatre.

Nominations this year surprised many with some unlikely shows coming into the spotlight.  Comedy series such as Flight of the Conchords and the hugely popular animated series Family Guy. In a statement from creator Seth MacFarlane he says, “the idea that ‘Family Guy’ can transcend animation and be honored as one of the best comedies on television is truly rewarding.”  Not even The Simpsons has had that honor; the last animated series to achieve that was The Flintstones in 1961.

Many of the most likely suspects failed to pick up nominations this year. Desperate Housewives whose actresses usually get at least one nomination didn’t receive any this year. The same for the lead actress of Ugly Betty, America Ferrera, a winner of the best actress in a comedy series last year. Even HBO’s breakout hit, True Blood, failed to get any nominations in any of the main categories.

But 30 Rock once again dominated the field with 22 nominations total, in best comedy series, best actress in a comedy series (Tina Fey), and best actor in a comedy series (Alec Baldwin). Mad Men, a period dramatic series set at a advertising agency in New York in the 1960’s, has come in second with 16 nods.

Also, such underdog performers such as comedic performers Sarah Silverman, from The Sarah Silverman Program, Jim Parsons, for The Big Bang Theory, and for the popular new hit The Mentalist, Simon Baker all received nominations.

With 99 nominations, HBO was the leader among the networks, followed by NBC with 67 nominations, and then ABC with 55.
