Last night (16.08.10) saw the premiere of The Big C in the US, the new Showtime original series starring Academy Award winner Laura Linney as Cathy Jamison, a woman who decides to make a change once she receives the news that she is dying of cancer.

The dark comedy is set in Stamford, Connecticut, where Cathy has been living out her life as a reserved school teacher and suburban house wife and mother.  Her marriage is on the rocks and her teenage son has become rebellious and spiteful, but when Cathy receives the diagnosis of Stage Four melanoma, she decides that she is sick of being “the sensible one” and decides to start having fun; she purchases a brand new convertible, builds her dream pool in her back yard, and begins having dessert as her appetiser!

Starring Oliver Platt as Cathy’s immature husband, Paul, and featuring Precious star Gabourey Sidibe as Andrea, one of Cathy’s most challenging students, The Big C is a comedy-drama about letting loose and enjoying every moment.  Creator Darlene Hunt says, “…as dark as it is, I didn’t want to do a show about someone battling cancer but rather someone who is living life to the fullest in the time she has left.”

The Big C looks to be a funny, inspirational show that is well worth the watch.  But then again, would we expect any less of the network that brought us Dexter and Weeds?  For more information about the series click HERE, and we’ll hopefully see the show over here asap!
