The Guard

The Guard

Set for release on 19th August is a current BATD HQ favourite, The Guard.

This movie shows Brendan Gleeson as a small-town officer with anger issues, a strange sense of humour, a preference for prostitutes and a dying mother, having to participate in an FBI level drug bust. I didn’t know what to expect when I sat down for this one, but almost instantly knew it would be in my top films of the year. Gleeson is magnificent in it, all types of statues and awards should be thrown at him for this performance.

The operation beings FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) to his door, however despite the fact that Boyle seems more interested in mocking and undermining Everett than in actively working to solve the case, he finds that circumstances keep pulling him back into the thick of it.

The witty plot sees Boyle soon realise that he needs to take matters into his own hands and the only person he can trust is Everett. The relationship between Cheadle and Gleeson is brilliant, it is a Brit style of buddy movie. I totally recommend this one to anyone, it will really make you laugh, thoroughly entertaining!

The film also stars Mark Strong and Liam Cunningham, and was written and directed by John Michael McDonagh (brother of In Bruges writer-director, Martin McDonagh).

The Guard has already garnered huge acclaim on opening in Ireland, where it opened at number 1 with an impressive box office taking.

Watch out for it when it hits cinemas here on 19th August.
