The Kids Are All Right is one film that has been kept in the city closet for far too long. The romantic comedy, which has been dubbed “the lesbian marriage movie,” opened in major American cities on 9th July. Finally, this past weekend, it started to filter out of the cities and into the suburbs, but sorry to all you Brits out there reading this, no UK release date has been set.

Annette Bening and Julianne Moore

Talk has been going around about this film since January when it was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival in the US. So what is all the fuss about?

The critically acclaimed film is about Nic and Jules (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore), a lesbian couple, and their two children, 18-year-old Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and 15-year-old Laser (Josh Hutherson), who set out to find the man who made their lives possible. After Joni and Laser find their biological father, Paul (Mark Ruffalo), the dynamic of the family is put in danger.

In a light-hearted way, this feature film takes a good, hard (and sometimes hilarious) look at the reality of gay marriage and same-sex parenthood in America today.

This is definitely a new take on the nuclear family that has never been seen on the big screen before.
