For those not offended by his Globes performance, 19 February sees the start of regular Ricky Stateside. Ricky Gervais, writing partner Stephen Merchant, and their sidekick Karl Pilkington will be animated into an HBO series entitled The Ricky Gervais Show.

Gervais and Merchant started the XFM radio show in 2001 where they talked about whatever came to mind at the time. In 2005, Pilkington joined the show and, with The Guardian sponsoring, it became a podcast . That is when it really started to take off. With over 3 million downloads in just three months, the boys hold the Guinness Book of World Records for the most popular podcast on the Internet.

Now they’re taking it one step further and animating their audio for HBO, who signed them for 13 half-hour episodes. They are hoping that this project will run forever and that they become an equivalent to The Simpsons, who recently celebrated their 20th anniversary. The animation idea was created as a way to soften the content of the audio, which occasionally is vulgar because they don’t write it before the show airs. For followers of the podcast, you may recognize the audio from previous airings, but don’t fret, they are still recording new episodes with new material.

Although Gervais and Merchant are well known as comedians for writing and creating The Office, Pilkington brings the humour to this show. Gervais describes him as the “funniest man alive in Britain today,” because of his eccentric behaviour and random topics, and his round head.

This is not the first time Gervais has been on HBO. Last April, he did a stand-up act called Ricky Gervais: Out of London. It received rave reviews for being well paced, well aimed, and well delivered.

Everyone involved also has other projects they’re working on. Gervais and Merchant wrote and directed the film Cemetery Junction, which Gervais also stars in, and Pilkington is getting his own travel show on Sky 1 in the UK, where he visits the Seven Wonders of the World. The Ricky Gervais Show will make its way back to the UK on Channel 4 starting in March.
