Tierney Gearon's Controversial Pictures of her Children

Tierney Gearon

Tierney Gearon began her career on the other side of the camera – as a fashion model. Touring the world and being snapped for five years, it wasn’t until an agent in Paris caught sight of her scrapbook of Polaroids that she was persuaded to explore life as a photographer. Now her last offering is on display at the Phillips de Pury & Company Gallery, London.

Successful enough to be published on billboards in Times Square and in magazines like i-D, Gearon experienced a completely different type of recognition following a controversial exhibition she was part of, I Am Camera, at the Saatchi Galleries in 2001. The show sparked debate between critics, while police filed a report to the Crown Prosecution Service for the public display of her children either naked or semi-naked. The case was dropped as the courts did not see the photos as lewd or sexually provocative. Gearon fought back that her children are a significant part of her life, and it was natural that they would be the subject of her photography. They are now part of the Saatchi private collection.

The current exhibition, Explosure, is Tierney’s first solo show since 2001, and explores images layered by double exposure, concentrating on family and friends while travelling the world. The images Gearon decides to combine are done so because of their opposing subjects: the young and the old, interior spaces and the outdoors, companionship and solitude. Make sure not to miss this rare opportunity as it closes at the end of the month.
