Community work for all?

Community work for all?

Cameron: Power to the People

Are YOU ready to take on the responsibility of the library, post office, recycling centre and youth centre where you live?

Yep, thought not! Our Prime Minister seems to think we’re all up for this as he outlines his plans for the ‘Big Society.’

I‘m going to be brutal. It’s not that I don’t care, it’s just that I don’t care enough to get involved. Am I really selfish or just saying what we all really think?

I know these are useful facilities where I live, but have to admit I just take them for granted or never even think about them.

I just can’t get on Cameron’s level about us running them. The average person has to go to work, look after the home, take the kids to classes, do the shopping, then it’s 10pm and you’ve only just sat down for the night!

When am I going to get time to go and volunteer at the recycling centre or post office? Weekends, I hear you crying out. Ermmm no, I’m busy and I just don’t want to. There, I’ve said it. I don’t want to sift through people’s empty wine bottles, when I could be sat on my couch glugging on my own bottle.

I don’t think I’m alone on this one. You wouldn’t get my teenage brother giving up time with his mates to volunteer. My twenty-something sister has shopping and dating to fill her spare time. Let’s not forget mum who has hobbies and interests that take up her time up outside work, home and parental duties.

I reckon the older generation will probably be more likely to end up giving up all their time to support and run these services. That isn’t fair on them. For those that want to do it – fantastic. But for those that don’t, there could well be a heap of pressure on them to act in the right way for their community.

Another glaring fault with this idea is these public services should surely be manned by professionals with expertise in this area, not by volunteers who don’t have a clue? Moreover, do we not pay all our taxes for these services?

Call me cynical, but if this all goes wrong Cameron can get out of it by saying he dispersed the responsibility to us. Cameron just gave us the idea and it’s our fault that it hasn’t worked out. Power to the People, get it?

The last thing I have to say on this if you have a dormant bank account, get back down to your bank or building society like…NOW.

Cameron will be raiding out of action bank accounts to pay for this. Can you believe that an eye watering 400 MILLION pounds are sitting untouched in banks all over the country. A pure travesty. Act now, before it’s too late.
