This year Wimbledon is set to be very exciting. With 23 year old Spaniard Rafael Nadal out of the draw due to a knee injury, the title is up for grabs. Nadal suffered a shocking loss in the fourth round of Roland Garros, to Swede Robin Soderling. He had currently held the winning title at the French Open for four years in a row. Rafa, as his fans have affectionately dubbed him, was treated for tendinitis back in Madrid, immediately following his defeat at the French Open. “Not to play Wimbledon is the one the toughest decisions in my career, but the decision was made easier because I didnt feel 100%. I dont feel that I am ready to play in a tournament that is as important as Wimbledon” says Nadal. Hoping to capture the Wimbledon title again, world number two Roger Federer comes back to the competition after his win at this years French Open. After the win and defeat of Robin Soderling, Federer went down in the books as one of the greatest tennis players in the sport. The win makes this the 14th Grand Slam title for the Swiss player, tying with American legend Pete Sampras standing record. Nadal took the Wimbledon title last year, breaking Federers five year winning streak at the tournament. Brit player Andy Murray, is a favorite for this years competition as well. After winning the Queens court Wimbledon warm up, and claiming the number three seed, he is expected to go far in the competition.

On the womens side, American sisters Venus and Serena Williams are set to compete, as well as world number one Dinara Safina and fellow Russian, Maria Sharapova. French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova is hoping to capture the Wimbledon title as well, after her victory over Safina. The younger sister of former mens number one, Marat Safin might hold the number one title, but she has yet to win a Grand Slam title leading to speculations of whether or not she is deserving on the position. This year is set to be extremely exciting for fans everywhere of the sport. The tournament runs from Monday, June 22  with the mens singles final to run on Sunday July 5. This year is also the first year that the retractable roof will be ready for use over centre court eliminating the inconvenience of rain delays for matches taking place on the court.
