YO! Sushi

YO! Sushi

When YO! Sushi (Poland Street, Soho), first opened its doors in 1997, it took fast food to a whole new level, introducing Londoners to a totally new dining experience. 12 years on, how does it stand out from the competition?

Walking into YO! the first thing I notice is just how busy it is for a  miserable Monday in January at 6.20pm. Taking this as a good sign, we are led to our seats in a comfy little corner managing to avoid the ‘sitting really close to a stranger’ set up that makes some people avoid the place. The restaurant itself is bright with lots of orange everywhere, and it still has that futuristic feel which made it so famous in the late 90’s.

Food was whizzing by thick and fast and as we ordered our green teas (January detox, of course) we were told the boiler was broken down so could we choose something else? Um, not a great start but we decided to go with the recommended Sake (January detox officially off). After picking a few bits and pieces off the belt we ordered a couple of hot dishes from the extensive menu. Tucking into some dumplings our waitress came back to tell me the squid had run out; could we choose something else (again)? Not having what I wanted was beginning to get a bit annoying, but the dishes that we had tasted so good that it didn’t really matter.

Vegetable rice went perfectly with Black Asian Cod, and Tempura Soft Shell Crab was a real highlight – light and crisp and not at all greasy (despite accidentally mistaking the fingerbowl for an exotic dip, oops!). The choice really is fantastic, the only worry being just how long everything has been on the belt, but it all tasted fresh.

Is it value for money? Well yes, if you have the 40% off promotion voucher which is what most people were waving around (that explains the queue out the door by the time we left) but it can be a bit expensive if you go for the higher quality dishes. The service was excellent. Over all 3*.
