We’ve just heard the shocking news, designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead after taking his own life. A source at McQueen’s office this afternoon confirmed his death, saying: “It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.”

One of Britain’s greatest designers, he trained in Savile Row making suits for Prince Charles, and  was named British designer of the year four times between 1996 and 2003.

McQueen went on to receive a CBE, as well as being named International Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer Awards.

The 40-year-old millionaire was found this morning at an address in Westminster. He had hanged himself. His suicide comes just three years after his close friend, Isabella Blow – who helped him become a rising star – also killed herself.

Scotland Yard confirmed that they had been called to an address in Green Street by the ambulance service at 10.20am. A spokeswoman said that a man, aged 40, had been found dead at the scene. She added: “The death is being treated as non-suspicious.” The address is believed to be McQueen’s home and it is not known if anyone else was at the address at the time.

McQueen posted a string of worrying posts on his Twitter page revealing his state of mind.

On February 7 he wrote: “sunday evening been a ****ing awful week but my friends have been great but now i have to some how pull myself together.”

And on February 3 he wrote: “I’m letting my followers know the my mother passed away yesterday if it she had not me nor would you RIPmumxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.”

He then followed it up with: “but life must go on.”
