Beyond Biba: A Portrait of Barbara Hulanicki

She was a pioneering force in the swinging  60’s and with the launch of her Topshop range Barbara Hulanicki has been placed firmly back on the fashion map. With this in mind a documentary about Hulanicki is due for release. Titled Beyond Biba: A Portrait of Barbara Hulanicki, the film looks at the ups and downs of the label which sadly closed its doors in 1975 after running into financial difficulty.

Tom Walters the film’s producer explains, “Everyone had heard of Biba, It was a real part of swinging Sixties London, but Barbara was reclusive, and most people in the UK don’t know what happened to her after Biba closed.” Biba was relaunched in 2006 but once again went into administration due to money troubles once again. The documentary also uncovers Hulanicki’s sad past, including the murder of her diplomat father killed by extremist group, the Stern Gang, in 1948. It is due to screen at the Victoria & Albert Museum this Friday.  For more on fashion and film read, our article charting the rise of fashions great love affair with film.
