Jean-Paul Gaultier is quitting his role as artistic director at Hermes.

The French fashion designer has been working with the legendary fashion house since 2003, but has decided to quit so he can focus on his own line.

In a statement, Hermes said: “Hermes is deeply grateful to Jean-Paul Gaultier for his outstanding creative contribution during these seven years.”

Jean-Paul will be replaced by Lacoste creative director Christophe Lemaire in the job at the French luxury goods company after the spring/summer 2011 collection is unveiled later this year.

He initially took over the role from Martin Margiela in 2003, releasing his first collection in autumn 2004.

Although Jean-Paul will be moving to focus on his haute couture range, Hermes will continue to own a 45 per cent stake in his line, meaning the working relationship will continue.

Lemaire is considered an unexpected choice by much of the fashion community, as he is not currently a well-known name outside of style circles.

We’re just glad the split is amicable!
