It’s Time To Raid Your Underwear Drawer

From the subtle to the dramatically revealing, lingerie-inspired looks dominated the catwalks for spring/summer 2010. Underwear is no longer just underwear, it is outerwear: satin corsets, bra-tops, big knickers, lace-trimmed briefs and camisoles were on show everywhere. And now that the sun is making an appearance, it’s time for us mere mortals to raid the underwear drawer and (deep breath) get to exposing our undergarments, or at least a lace trim or pretty bra strap.

Olivia Rubin Bodice Dress £255

This game of peek-a-boo is no new passtime, but not since Madonna championed the conical bra in the 80s have we all wanted to play. Once upon a time visible bra straps were a big fashion sin, but no more: now it’s ok, chic even, to get the whole thing out!  From exposed glamour to subverted sweetness, there are lots of ways to work this trend, and it’s not about baring all. Alexander Wang showed how to do a relaxed lingerie look, combining American off duty sportswear with lace trims, sheer fabrics and corset seaming. Christopher Kane avoided all out sexiness with a soft, pastel palette, giving his bra-style contouring and sheer panelling a more romantic than raunchy feel; while Marc Jacobs and Just Cavalli took the inside out theme quite literally with bra tops fastened over tees, vests and blouses.

Simon Ekrelius Black Sheer Jacket £350

The brave can look to Dolce & Gabbana and Dior among others to heat things up. From little black lace dresses (with not a whole lot underneath), big knickers and flirty romper suits to lace-trimmed briefs and sheer camisoles, glamour ruled at both.

Remember there is a fine line between classy and cheap when working inside out, and we want to stay on the former side of sexy. There are, believe it or not, ladylike ways to show your bra, one of the easiest being under a plain, sheer top. And sheer fabrics are likewise a great place to start if you’re not feeling so brave: simply wear with a slip.

Vintage Lace Bow Headpiece £59

For a barely-there (yet altogether there) look, play with this season’s new nudes; or opt for corset seaming for a more wearable and modest take on the exposed bra . If you’re really not sure about underwear as outerwear, embrace the lace in your accessories with a naughty but nice lace bow headpiece or lace clutch.
