Fashion is infamously known as a brutal industry. In the words of Heidi Klum on Project Runway… “One day you’re in – the next, you’re out!”.

So with competition between designers getting more and more intense as the economy suffers, it’s initiatives like Fashion Fringe at Covent Garden that give emerging talent a realistic chance of making it.

Fashion Fringe was set up to help unsigned talent break the industry by offering them a cash prize and the chance to show a capsule collection at London Fashion Week. The scheme was founded and is directed by, Colin McDowell MBE but has recently brought on board a rather famous face as honorary Chairperson. None other than John Galliano, the designer taken on to front Christian Dior.

He said: “I am hoping we find a rebel genius. I will look for someone who reminds me of me when I was starting out – someone original, unique, who has their own style and handwriting and isn’t afraid to try something new. Fashion sometimes gets scared and plays it too safe – but I want to push boundaries.

This marks a creative push from Colin McDowell and his team, as Galliano is known for his extrovert designs and controversial collections.

Of Galliano, McDowell said: “Thinking about recent events has made me re-examine what the spirit of London fashion really is – and that is bold, exciting fashion that breaks through the barriers and moves fashion. And, of course, nobody does it with such imagination and fabulous originality as John Galliano. This is the searching, radical spirit we are planning to uncover and bring back to London fashion through its young designers.”

The application process for Fashion Fringe at Covent Garden 2010 opened on 15th March 2010 and closes on April 30 2010. For more information visit
