Karl Lagerfeld’s maternity design for Kate Middleton

The oh-so-fashionable Duchess of Cambridge has been mixing high end designers and high street favourites like Alexander McQueen, Jenny Packam, Reiss, Mulberry, Temperley London, and Zara ever since she stepped into the royal spotlight. However, despite Karl Lagerfeld’s desire to dress the Duchess, she has yet to be seen in Chanel. Lagerfeld has complemented the Duchess on her “romantic” beauty, and “nice silhouette,” and now the designer has finally got the chance to sketch out a design for the pregnant Kate Middleton.

Women’s Wear Daily included a feature asking various designers to design maternity pieces for the Duchess of Cambridge. His custom made dress is a Marie Antoinette inspired gown, with a cleavage bearing neckline, long sleeves, and draping silouette. The navy blue, high-waisted front is an intricate and non-traditional style of maternity wear that would be sure to turn heads.

“I think this dress is very much in her taste” Lagerfeld said of the design.”Proud to be pregnant” is written beside the sketch, which explains a partial inspiration behind Lagerfeld’s somewhat revealing and elaborate maternity dress.

Lagerfeld has previously drawn up a sketch for the Duchess’s wedding dress that featured an open front with high boots. Lagerfeld is clearly trying to steer the Duchess’s style in a more daring and revealing approach. We’re not sure how we feel about thigh high boots with a wedding dress, but his maternity sketch seems like a more realistic and wearable approach to designing a dress for the pregnant Kate Middleton.

Other designers in WWD’s feature that also sketched maternity wear for Kate Middleton include Nina Ricci, Donna Karan, and Vera Wang. You can see their maternity sketches for the Duchess of Cambridge here.
