Celia Birtwell

Celia Birtwell was born in 1941 in Lancashire. In 1959 she met fashion designer Ossie Clark whom she married in 1969. Between 1967 and 1973 the couple were at the pinnacle of the fashion world, dressing everyone from rock stars to royalty. Birtwell’s designs are synonymous with the 70’s, hailed as the most important textile designer of her generation. Birtwell continues to wow us with her sell out collaboration with Topshop each season, now she has set her sights on a beauty and accessory range for Boots. Her collection features sunglasses which are priced at £30-£70, cosmetic bags in Celia’s classic print in ‘Cherry Spot’, vintage style mirrors, brush rolls and much more. Head down to Boots to get in on a piece of the action now. We caught up with Celia to talk about fashion, her dislike of Ugg Boots and her love of Carmen rollers! Read on to find out more…

Tell us how you got started in the fashion industry?
At Salford Art School I did textiles because they did not have a  fashion course!   I came to London and then met Ossie (Clark) and the rest is history…

Do you have any further high street collaborations in the pipeline?
We will carry on working with Boots for the rest of 2009 and hopefully if people like what we are doing, this will continue and expand into 2010 with new products – I have my eye on a few areas that I would love to get my teeth into!  We also have the second collection coming out with Millets www.millets.co.uk –  there are some pretty outdoor things including flip flops and a beach bag, as well as wellies and the tents  – it’s all hot pinks and oranges – very Indian Summer!!

Which trend do you think will dominate Spring/Summer 09?
I don’t really work to trends, but I hope we will all try to banish the horrible weather and depressing news with lots of brights: oranges, pinks – pretty and fun colours that will delight us all and keep our spirits lifted!

What investment piece is at the top of your wish list for Spring/Summer 09?
A Miriam Haskell necklace, ear rings and bracelet …. or another diamond ring, but bigger!
