We’re firm fans of Mimi Berry’s fabulous bags, both contemporary and stylish they’re the perfect accompaniment to any outfit. We caught up with the lady behind the bags to talk shopping advice, Hermes Scarves and Victoria Beckham’s chest!  Read on to find out more…

How did you get started?
I studied Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins and started a stall at Spittlefields market a year after I graduated; selling purses and handbags I had made myself at home. I was soon selling so many that I found a local East London manufacturer and they began having them made instead. I saved the money and opened my studio shop two years later.

What’s your favourite part of the design process?
Ah, the actual making. I love working with the leather and fabric. Trying them on myself in the studio is great fun, and I always ask my friends if they could “try this one out for a few days” – they never refuse!

Your designs are classic and contemporary - where do you find inspiration for your collection each season?
Books, films, galleries. I went to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the National Portrait Gallery this summer for inspiration.

What investment piece is at the top of your wish list for Spring/Summer 09?
A pair of Ferragamo Icon Pumps. They will last forever and you can wear them with almost everything. Perfect design.

Which trend do you think will dominate Spring/Summer 09?
I hope that the trend for choosing good quality and more sustainable clothing and accessories stays with us and doesn’t pass like a trend on the high street. Everyone could benefit from buying less but better quality things, just like my bags!

Whose timeless style do you admire and why?
My mother.

How would you describe your personal style?
Utilitarian glamour.

How do you individualise a look?
Scarves, scarves, scarves. And lipstick. I love them both. I got my first Hermes Scarf last year, and it is on its first trip to the dry cleaners as we speak. A seminal moment. A scarf being dry-cleaned, who would have thought?

Where do you like to shop?
I have no specific shops, but I always bring something home from Beyond Retro, off Brick Lane, and YSL for their cocktail rings. I like Vanessa Bruno, and have a few fantastic dresses from her, so they will be out again come summer-time. I like Margaret Howell too, such beautiful English clothes.

Your best advice when it comes to shopping would be?
Think before you buy. Will I use this and what can I wear with it? If it fulfils these criteria, take it home.

What must have item should every woman have in her wardrobe?
A fantastic silk scarf.  A Fur coat. Brogues.

Biggest fashion faux pas?
Victoria Beckham? Put that chest away, dear.

Who are your favourite designers?
Tatty Devine for jewellery, a must have, I have loads of it. Rae Jones for Shoes, I stocked her first collection in my shop, and wore the Tea heels all winter. They were so lovely to wear.

Are you a beauty junkie? What is your must-have beauty product?
NARS lipstick, I have worn their Schiap pink for a few years now, and the colour still looks great and modern.
